Living wallpaper for Mac
Shan Shui
An endless ink landscape,
drifting behind your desktop.
Completely free · macOS 13 or later
Mac App Store release in preparation
A live painting unfolding in your browser.
Your desktop, with room to breathe
More scenery.
Less noise.
Always another view.
Mountains, trees, boats and pavilions are drawn as the landscape moves. No playlist, no loop to get tired of. Just another stretch of scenery.
Still your desktop.
The painting sits behind your icons. Its controls live in a small pavilion in the menu bar, and each display gets its own view.
Your kind of quiet.
Choose the drift speed, or pause on a favorite view. Motion pauses when your desktop is hidden and can pause on battery power. macOS Reduce Motion keeps the painting still.
Make it yours
A little ink.
Your kind of paper.
Choose from six palettes, or mix your own colors. Shape the mountains, peak height, distant scenery and boats. Start a new landscape whenever you want a fresh beginning.

piece of code.
Every mountain, tree, boat and pavilion is generated by shan-shui-inf, created by Lingdong Huang. It turns native JavaScript into an endless Chinese ink landscape.
Jacob Kanfer built the Mac wallpaper experience around it. The original project is open source under the MIT License, and its copyright and license travel with the app and this website.
